BCS thoughts, Nov. 5

This week's ratings are out, and Alabama did in fact sneak ahead of Stanford for No. 3, but if both keep winning, that will eventually change.  Stanford has a significant advantage in the polls, and will eventually get close enough to the Tide in the computers to move ahead overall.

As I said earlier though, this week's ratings don't necessarily have any bearing on what might happen a month from now if Oklahoma State and Stanford pick up a loss somewhere along the way.

Right now, voters are not voting for Alabama or Boise State or anyone but Oklahoma State and Stanford for No. 2.  They are not lining up teams for what might happen later on.  Voters not only have no short-term memory, they have no long-term vision.  If it gets to the point where they have to make a decision among the teams piled up behind OSU and Stanford in the polls, then they'll consider that at the time, and votes could change.

Other things could have an impact then.  What if Georgia wins out to the SEC title game and gives LSU a fight?  Voters will be reminded that Boise spanked the Bulldogs in week one, and maybe that inspires them to give the Broncos a shot at the big prize.  Maybe Oklahoma ends up winning the Big 12, and the voters, which have always shown a bias for conference champions (in the BCS era, the voters have never put a team in the top two of the final regular season poll that did not win its conference), will move the Sooners to the top of the list.  Undefeated Boise State would be a conference champion as well.

Or maybe they'll go against what they have done before and create an LSU-Alabama (or LSU-Oregon?) rematch.

For now, the Cowboys are in the driver's seat for a matchup with LSU in the title game.  Stanford, despite this week's ratings, needs just one of those two to lose.  After that, we'll see.

Houston is up to No. 11 and would automatically qualify if the Cougars finish undefeated and someone beats Boise State.

Cincinnati is the highest-rated Big East team at No. 23.  You get the feeling the Bearcats could win out and not crack the top 15.

It's a good thing for the Big Ten that there is still a month left.  As it stands right now, Penn State is the only team ranked high enough to be in the BCS at-large pool.  It would help if a couple of teams would step up and win out (I still have faith in Michigan, so you all can keep calling me crazy for at least another week).  The Big Ten has put an at-large team in the BCS every year since 2004.

Wow you do look in a crystal ball. I like the way you explained why the system will end the way it will but you still have faith in Michigan. Sounds like your crystal ball might be saying something different.

I agree.  We all love our teams, win or lose.  I am an OU fan and I know that our shot for the national title ended with our loss to Tx Tech AT HOME.....I honestly believe the reason for Stanford love is because of Andrew Luck....(like prior years that included Matt Leinert, Vince Young, Tim Tebow and yes...Cam Newton).  I have tremendous respect for how physical the SEC is and how tough their schedules are.  The Big 12 is all about offense.  Even though OKST managed to beat K-State....they still allowed them to rush for over 175 yards on the ground (and that was by the quarterback) and over 100 yards in the air.  OU only allowed 36 yards of total offense in the second half against K-State and sacked the quarterback SEVEN times.....and we managed to beat them by more than a touchdown.
We learned our team should EVER assume they have an easy road.....when you have a target on your backs....every little team is out to get you....doesn't matter if they don't ever win another game....if they can beat the highest ranking team in the country...that makes their season!!  So, enjoy may be #2 now....but you still have three games to play and OU is waiting for you at the end of that road!!!  Oh and by the way.....I like Roll Tide!!

Sick and tired of this SEC garbage, I really really believe this is the year the SEC gets shut the hell up.  The big 12 was by far a stouter conference this year than the SEC.  That was a horrible game between LSU and BAMA.  I think Stanford, Ok state, boise even OU could beat BAMA OR LSU.  I love college football and I watch games from all over the country but I watch the SEC the least because the games are BORING!!!  and the SEC's love of poor academics.  It would be an absolute trajedy if Bama gets another shot.

you are an idiot and really dont know your head from your ass when it comes to football.  Bama has a great defense but still would not be able to keep up with Ok state and stanford is much more physical than most give them credit for they would really slow bama's offense and stanford would score on them.  Hell I think Boise could beat Bama.  That was a HORRIBLE game with LSU  and you got beat at home no way in hell should they get another chance.

Yes , you are in fact a total idiot. Try learning how to post online or is that a little to forward thinking where you are from. Still using a horse drawn plow maybe? There is no reason to consume an entire webpage with blank space other than idiocy....PERIOD! On topic now, Boise St beat a medium of the road SEC team. Last week, South Carolina was ranked at the top of the SEC East and got blasted by Arkansas who happens to be a distant 3rd in the SEC West division. And since you obviously have no clue how the internet works i can only assume you actually know little about football so i will explain in very simple terms so your unevolved brain can understand. When I say distant 3rd, I mean talent wise. Either LSU or Bama would destroy Arkansas in 10 out of 10 games this year. So are you understanding the talent gap between LSU/Bama and the rest of the SEC now? Had anyone else played against LSU or Bama the way they played last Saturday night it would have been an absolute blowout...50-0 kind of blowout. No one in the country would have done much against those defenses especially considering they both averaged 35 to 40 points a game against everyone else including #2 Oregon in LSU's first game. Sorry Kevin, Boise St is an excellent team without a doubt but the little engine that could wont get a chance until they play more quality teams besides one middle of the road SEC team. In the mean time, learn a little about the speed of SEC football. I would love to see Boise play Alabama in the Sugar Bowl and then you will truly understand how much more that little team from Idaho needs to grow to compete at the highest levels. Alabama 35 - Boise St 7

I agree with the below, although personally I would prefer Alabama over Boise or any 1 loss team if Stanford and Oklahoma State lose before the National Championship game.

Haha you dumb Alabama fan. MLP? Are you kidding? Most Least Player? How about LVP? It means Least Valuable Player. Your overall intelligence obviously is a great representation of your football intelligence. So because Stanford ALMOST lost last week to a good USC team on the ROAD (at the Coliseum: known for being a tough place to play), they should be ranked below Alabama, even though Alabama DID LOSE at HOME. Stanford has the best quarterback in the country, while, you said it yourself, Alabama has about an average quarterback. Stanford also has more physical lines both on the offensive and defensive sides. And even though Stanford's secondary isn't as fast as Alabama's WRs, Stanford's tight ends would give Alabama's secondary issues. Alabama had it's chance (AT HOME) and lost. They do not deserve another in the National Championship.

Maybe if Boise gets past Nevada this year we can think about that.

Alabama drio

This is what is ruining college football.  The SEC bias has become so ridiculous that even die hard NCAA fans like myself are starting to look at this system more like boxing.  How can Alabama get beat at home and drop to #3.  AT HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!  What an absolute joke!!  If you lose in your house t1QQQ1QQhere is no way you should avoid a major fall in the polls.  I think Bama at 7 or 8 would be a stretch..  Ran11king Bama 3 is just sicking and undefensable.   To all you SEC fans out there who think I am the idiot, lets just hope that LSU and Boise St play for the National Championship!  I will promise you that LSU can't keep them out of the endzone like they did to the Crimson Tide.  Rather than talk smack about Boise, why don't you people try putting your money where your mouth is and supporting that matchup.  Everyone from the SEC and the Eas}'']''''''''''''''''''/]

t coast writers, all like to say that the Boise St and TCU types can't hang, but over the last 5 years, Boise St,
